Incidental references to church clocks in early modern England

Please follow this link to access the Bedfordshire Parish Clocks database.

This site centres on churchwardens’ accounts because, almost uniquely among early modern sources, they can provide fairly reliable negative evidence. However, they survive for a minority of parishes. A good deal of incidental information is available for parishes without accounts, but there is no reliable way of inferring the absence of a working clock from that evidence.

A database of incidental references to church clocks can be accessed from this part of the website. This is an accumulation of mentions of church clocks, and makes no claims whatever to be comprehensive. The accumulation of references to clocks is ongoing, and I hope that users of the site will feel willing to contribute information that is not already here.

All such contributuons will be fully acknowledged, both directly to the reporter, and on the website.
